Blood Genetics
After we did the Punnett square we had to do research on blood genetics. This was to show that we understood the topic of blood genetics
In every body there are red blood cells. If you are A blood type you have a antigenes on you red blood cells. If you are B blood type you will have a antigenes, and if you are o blood type you have o antigenes. There are two special blood types when it comes to blood transfusions. People with type O blood are universal donors because there are no molecules on the surface of the red blood cells that can trigger an immune response. People with type AB blood are universal recipients because they do not have any antibodies that will recognize type A or B surface molecules
The A and B antigen molecules on the surface of red blood cells are produced by two different enzymes from your parents. These two alleles are encoded by different alleles, of the same gene: A and B. The A and B alleles form the enzymes that produce the type A and B antigens. A third enzyme of this gene, the O allele, for the protein that is not functional and does not produce surface molecules. Two copies of the gene are inherited, one from each parent.
The Rh factor is a protein that is found on the surface of the red blood cells. If your red blood cells have this protein, you are Rh positive. If your blood cells don't have this protein, you are Rh negative.
